Departing March 8th, this trip promises to be an experience and art awakening you will remember for the rest of your life.
The Art of Travel: Mixed Media Photo Encaustic
Enjoy the warm Peruvian sun and celebrate your inner creative explorer! Visit magical Macchu Piccu, local galleries, cultural sites and enjoy Peru’s gastronomic arts. Gather stunning photos from your travels and discover innovative techniques to hand alter these images, enhancing them with mixed media and encaustic (molten beeswax). Students will also be encouraged to document their journey keeping a mixed media book of drawings, paintings and experiences.
Join Shary Bartlett and Mark Glavina in one of the most magical places on earth. Whether you choose to explore mixed media or encaustic photo alteration with Shary from our hotel studio in the Sacred Valley, or enjoy drawing and painting in the streets of Ollantaytambo and Cusco, this trip will inspire your creativity and ignite your passion for making art on location.
Our tour begins with an overnight in Lima before a short flight to Cusco and onto Ollantaytambo, where we board a scenic train, which winds its way along the Wilcamayu River to Aguas Calientes, our base for discovery of the crowning jewel of Peruvian Archaeology, Machu Picchu: “Dwelling Place of the Gods” in the Inca Quechua language. After experiencing this jewel of Peruvian history we return to our hotel in Ollantaytambo in the heart of the Sacred Valley. We spend the week enjoying the people, communities, and physical beauty of the Sacred Valley as we gather inspiration for our workshop in the comfort of our hotel lodge on the banks the Urubamba River. From here we discover the circular terraces of Moray, the ancient salt works of Salineras, and the spectacular ruins of Ollantaytambo. After our time in the Sacred Valley, we then return to Cusco for a few low-key days to draw and paint the sights and streets of the colonial center, including Cathedral Santo Domingo, before our return flight to Lima and back home. Extension tours are available to Lake Titicaca, Araquipa, or into the Amazon for a jungle tour. This Itinerary is subject to change.
Suitable for new and experienced artists.
Students can elect to participate in mixed media photo alteration, encaustic or filling your sketchbook with drawing and paintings while on location. Supply lists can be found here (link). An additional nominal fee of $25 will be applied to students wishing to use shared encaustic supplies and equipment.
