Mark Glavina

Artist :  Mark Glavina

Mark Glavina studied graphic design and Illustration at Capilano University in the early 80’s and has worked as a teacher and illustrator with various contracts, commissions and earned a reputation as creative muralist.  In the 90’s he turned to developing his own fine art, exploring environmental and cultural issues, as well as working with the figure and portrait. Mark has been teaching and facilitating art for over 20 years, encouraging the benefits of art education for all ages and a pioneer of Community Public Art.

In 1997 Mark Glavina opened Phoenix Art Workshop in Steveston, BC as a way of engaging and supporting the art community.  He started commercial framing 19 years ago in the back of a Bird and Nature cottage and a year later took over the lease and launched the business.  Born out of the ashes of the bird store, the shop quickly grew from custom framing and hand-made artisan gifts to selling art supplies.  In 2001 he opened a new location on Chatham Street and began to offer art classes, but quickly outgrew this location as well and in 2009 moved classes to an annex studio one block away.  We have never looked back, staying connected to the artistic needs of our community and promoting the arts with events like the Steveston Grand Prix of Art, now celebrating it’s 5th year.  Our commitment to the arts is best illustrated with our Community Public Art Projects including our Cobb Conversations benches at Homma Elementary School and Our Community Kaleidoscope public art project at Hugh Boyd/ West Richmond Community Centre.
