Colombia 2014

Join Mark Glavina and Mike Radford as they host Phoenix Art Workshop’s 11th international painting excursion. Our visit to Colombia’s capital city of Bogota starts with an amazing tour of Teatro Colon, Plaza Bolivar, the Gold Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art, and a funicular ride to Monserrate. From Bogota we fly to one of the world’s most
famous coffee regions and explore Zona Cafetera’s towns of Armenia, Salento, and Pereira. We continue to the famous city of Medellin with a visit to the Museo Botero, dedicated to this most famous Colombian artist. Finally our Colombian adventure brings us to the magnificent walled Spanish city of Cartagena where we will spend the better part of a week drawing and painting in the streets of this historic colonial jewel. Don’t want the adventure to end? You can extend your two week holiday relaxing on the beaches of Santa Marta and Tananga, or snorkeling,
diving, hiking and horseback-riding in Tayrona National Park.

Bogota, the capital of Colombia. With its graceful churches, excellent museums, and thriving nightlife, can keep you busy for several days. Bogotá is also the political, financial, and service center for the country, and its geographic heart, making it a useful base from which to explore the country. Most travellers gravitate to the historic area of La Candelaria, a pleasant quarter of cafés, churches and museums near Plaza de Bolivar.

Zona Cafatera With just the brew of altitude and precipitation, the terraced slopes of the Zona Cafetera yield nearly half of Colombia’s coffee crop on just over 1% of the country’s total area. The conjunction of agreeable temperatures, lush green valleys, and impressive snow- capped peaks make it perfectly adapted for curious travelers as well. Nature is the real reason you come here, whether it’s to explore the lush and historic coffee plantations or experience the finca life.

Medellin: Forget everything you’ve read about Medellín – it’s probably old news by now. Yes, the city was the headquarters and principal battle grounds for Colombia’s cocaine cartels. But the world press forgot to report Medellín’s remarkable turn around. Today, it’s one of Latin America’s safest big cities, with mild temperatures year-round. Medellín deserves the nickname ‘City of Eternal Spring.’ Above all, it’s the people who will win you over.

Catagena A fairy-tale city of romance, legends and sheer beauty, Cartagena de Indias is an addictive place that can be hard to escape. This is the place to drop all sightseeing routines. Instead, just stroll through Cartagena’s maze of cobbled alleys, where enormous balconies are shrouded in bougainvillea and massive churches cast their shadows across leafy plazas. Without doubt, Cartagena’s old walled city is its principal attraction. It is a gem of colonial architecture, churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces and mansions.

Santa Marta’s grace as a colonial city has faded under newer concrete buildings, but its proximity to the sea still makes it an attractive destination. For Colombians, this is one of the most popular tourist towns in the country, offering liberal amounts of sun, rum, and long stretches of sandy beachfront property.

Taganga Only 10 minutes from Santa Marta lies this sleepy fishing village where the foot of the Serra Nevada mountains dips its toes into the pristine Caribbean Ocean, forming a perfect horseshoe bay. Fishing boats line the beach of this popular location, which deserves its reputation as an excellent dive and snorkeling site.
